| Charles James Edward Weedon married Maria Chiodetti at
Cambelltown, NSW in 1860. He died at Leichhardt, NSW in 1892. Charles wasn't born in NSW. Where did he come
from? Tasmania? It might be a coincidence, but a Charles James Weedon was a Tasmanian MP at about this time. This Charles married Charlotte Hardwicke in Launceston, Tasmania in 1839. Could he be our Charles's father? Our Charles married in 1860, his bride being only 18 years old. If our Charles is the son of the Tasmanian MP then Charles would have been about 20 years old at the time of his marriage. It doesn't prove anything but at least the dates make this a possibility. Charles the MP had children named Percy, Florence and Mary. So did our Charles. Coincidence? Our Charles died in 1892 at Leichhardt, NSW. I have ordered his death certificate. Wait and see. |

is pleased. Charles James Weedon's death certificate arrived today (5 Sep 2007). The quality of information on death certificates varies according to the knowledge and diligence of the informant who does the official paperwork. The informant to Charles' death was his wife, Mary Santa Fortunat(a) Weedon (Chiodetti). Mary did a top job, 9/10, thanks Mary. | Charles was born at
Launceston, Tasmania on 21 October 1833 (+/- six months). Date of
birth is a bit vague, the certificate tells us that he died on 21 April
1892 aged 58. His father was also named Charles James Weedon, occupation Woolstorer. He had pre-deceased his son. Interestingly Charles' mother is "unknown". Young Charles had left Tasmania in about 1856, aged 23, and spent the rest of his life in NSW. At age 25 (about 1858) he married Mary Santa Fortunat(a) Chiodetti at the District Registrar's Office at Campbelltown, NSW. Charles died on 21 April 1892 at 342 Young Street, North Annandale, Leichhardt, NSW. He was 58 years old and his occupation was mercantile clerk. The informant to his death was Mary S F Weedon of the same address. The cause of his death was cerebral haemorrhage and meningitis, of which he had suffered for three weeks. Charles had last seen his doctor, Dr George A Marshall of 263 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, on the day of his death. Charles was buried three days later on 24 April 1892 at The Necropolis (Church of England section). The officiating minister was Reverend J P Ollis. The undertaker was Thomas Crisford of Burwood. Witnesses were W J Bright and Thomas (surname not stated) Charles and Mary had the following children alive at the time of his death: 1) Mary Ellen McKinnon, age 31 (born about 1861) 2) Charles James Weedon, age 28 (born about 1864) 3) Florence Alice Bugden, age 26 (born about 1866) 4) Sydney Thomas Weedon, age 20 (born about 1872) 5) May Weedon, age 17 (born about 1875) 6) Percy Weedon, age 14 (born about 1878) |

| Charles' father is named as Charles James Weedon, woolstorer of Launceston, Tasmania. This is consistent with our guess that Charles James Weedon MP is the same person. Charles MP was a Launceston auctioneer. Perhaps he was a wool dealer / auctioneer. At the time of young Charles' birth in 1833, Charles MP would have been 23 years old. That's OK, but Charles MP did not marry Charlotte Hardwicke till 1839. I need to dig a bit into Charles MP's life prior to his marriage in 1839. Was he married previously? When did he arrive in Tasmania? Who did he arrive with? |

| I have found what I think are Charles' birth details at: http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=P&id=302078 Charles Weedon, born 1835 at Launceston, Tasmania Parents: Charles Weedon and Eliza (Pailing) also married in 1835 at Launceston. This might well be a previous marriage for Charles Weedon MP. Almost certainly it is the correct birth date for our Charles. This leads to a correction of one of the details in Charles' death certificate as provided by his wife. Charles' death certificate has an error after all. It gives his age as 58 at his death. He was in fact two years younger at 56. I wonder if this is a transcription error, rather than an error of his wife. Mary Weedon says Charles was resident of Tasmania for 25 years. With the adjustment in his birth year, this now indicates that Charles left Tasmania in about 1860 and married Mary shortly after at Campbelltown, NSW. Mary says that Charles was aged 25 when she married him. This is consistent. What This Means Charles' mother, Eliza, probably died between 1835 and 1839 (in 1839 his father remarried). Charles left Tasmania for NSW in 1860 at age 25. |
