The Carless Name

After the Restoration, Charles II asked Colonel William Carless, who had hidden him ifrom Cromwell's soldiers in the oak tree after his defeat at the Battle of Shrewsbury, to spell his name Carlos, in memory of the event. It has always seemed  to me a typically narcissistic whim of Charles, and of course was not followed. Charles awarded the Carless family the crest of the oak tree...Giles Swayne.
(Martha Griffiths is a descendant of Colonel William Carless...Wombat)

Unmarked in the churchyard is the grave of Colonel William Carless of Broom Hall, who probably saved the life of Charles II by sharing his hiding place with him in the Boscobel Oak. He was buried in the churchyard when he died in 1689. His burial is recorded in the parish registers: “Corinall William Carelesse, of Broumhall”

Wombat's Family ForestNever the Swayne Shall Meet

By Gail Boyle, September 2007

Pucklechurch - Swayne Family History and Genealogy That Pucklechurch sits in a wonderful historic and ancient landscape goes without saying, but there are also parts of its history tucked away just waiting to be revealed to a wider audience …. and sometimes, as I found, it’s revealed when you least expect it!  Whilst wandering around the church yard (on a mission for a family historian in Australia) I came across a monument with a tantalising inscription. It read:

TO THE
DEARLY LOVED MEMORY OF
BRIG. GENERAL
 SIR ERIC JOHN EAGLES SWAYNE
 K.C.M.G. C.B. C.B.E.
FORMERLY GOVERNOR
AND COMMANDER – IN – CHIEF OF SOMALILAND
AND GOVERNOR OF BRITISH HONDURAS
BORN MAY 14 1863, DIED SEP. 9 1929
AND YDA LAURA HIS WIFE
DIED 22, OCTOBER 1967
Sir Eric John Eagles Swayne, Grave at Pucklechurch So what exactly was the connection between this man and Pucklechurch?  My curiosity led me on a journey of discovery which revealed not only the exploits of Sir Eric but introduced me to a published author, a royal chaplain, and a Victorian lady traveller, all of whom are related and buried next to each other in our church yard. [1]
Swayne Window, Pucklechurch

The Swayne family connection with Pucklechurch goes back to the 18th century. The Rev. George Swayne, a clergyman like his father before him, was vicar here for about 60 years. A graduate of Wadham College Oxford, George came to Pucklechurch in 1772 and was subsequently vicar and then also rector of Dyrham until his death in 1827. A window dedicated to his family, his wife Sarah as well as 6 sons and 3 daughters can be seen at St. Thomas a Becket. In 1790 he published what is now an extremely rare and highly unusual book entitled:

Gramina Pascua: or a collection of specimens of the common pasture grasses, arranged in the order of their flowering, and accompanied with their Linnæan and English names, as likewise with familiar descriptions and remarks.

This item contains real dried specimens of common pasture grasses which may have been cultivated by Swayne himself, and possibly collected and dried by his daughters. Only a very few copies appear to have survived and one of these is held by Bristol City Museum. [2] This is an important work as it was the first treatise on pasture grasses for agriculture and calculated to spread knowledge of them amongst farmers and gentlemen. The Rev. George was a keen and knowledgeable botanist who corresponded with, and supplied information to, other contemporary botanists although not always accurately.[3]

Rev. George Carless Swayne, Grave at Pucklechurch

Sir Eric was the Rev. George Swayne’s great grandson.[4] He is buried next to his father, George Carless Swayne and his brother, George Gustav. Sir Eric’s father, studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he became a fellow and by 1850 Senior Dean. Judging by the learned publications he produced his first degrees must have been in the Classics but in 1851 he became a Bachelor of Divinity. [5] After his marriage to Margaret Eagles in 1855 he seems to disappear from British records. George and Margaret’s first son, George Gustav Carless Swayne was born in 1855 at the Rectory in Perivale, Middlesex. Like his father before him he was given the forename Carless and the family tree reveals a pattern of bestowing the mother’s maiden name as such. Carless was passed down like this through the family for generations. It stemmed originally from Colonel William Carless, reputedly one of the Royalists responsible for hiding Charles II in the “Boscobel Oak”, after the Battle of Shrewsbury. [6] That George Carless’ mother Martha ended her days living at Boscobel House in Clifton, Bristol seems more than mere coincidence and must pay reference to family history. Unfortunately George Gustav died in tragic circumstances whilst in Pucklechurch on 8th January 1858 - his death was recorded by the local Coroner as “suffocated by the turning of certain bed-furniture”. One can only imagine the circumstances.
So where did George Carless Swayne disappear to? Records at Oxford University suggest that he moved abroad, and was chaplain at Havre-de Grace in 1877. [7] Prior to this however he appears to have held the lofty status of chaplain to Princess Alice, Queen Victoria’s daughter at Darmstadt in Germany. [8] How he came to this post and what exact role he played research has yet to reveal but it appears that his son Eric was born at Darmstadt  in 1863 and it seems more than possible that the inclusion of “Gustav” in his first son’s name betrays a Germanic influence.

Sir Eric John Eagles Swayne was educated abroad and attended Royal Military College at Sandhurst as Gentleman Cadet for a year in 1882 until he joined the Welsh Regiment and later the Indian Staff Corps. He had a distinguished military and diplomatic career serving in India and Africa, particularly in the Burma Campaign (1885-7), the African Campaign (1898) and in Somaliland. [9] His rise through military ranks and diplomatic appointments can be traced through entries in the London Gazette: by 1901 he was in command of the Somaliland Field Force and was later Commissioner, Commander-in-Chief and Consul General of the Somaliland Protectorate. He led four expeditions there including one against Sheikh Haji Mohamed bin Abdullah Hassan, who has been demonised in British imperial history as "the mad mullah of Somaliland" for his opposition to colonial rule.   Between 1906 and 1913 he was Governor of the British Honduras, receiving his knighthood on the occasion of “His Late Majesty’s Birthday” in June 1910, Edward VII having died the month before. He performed several roles during the First World War including being Assistant Inspector of Recruiting and he eventually retired as a Brigadier General with a military C.B.E in 1919 and died in 1929.
Frances Louisa Swayne, Grave at Pucklechurch

The only female member of Swayne family for whom I have found a legible tombstone in Pucklechurch is Frances Louisa Swayne, Sir Eric’s first cousin. Her history is possibly also one of the most adventurous and intriguing for a woman living in Victorian England.  Frances was the daughter of an eminent physician Joseph Griffiths Swayne, a pioneer in anaesthetics, an obstetrician and researcher into the cause of cholera. [10] She appears to have been very well- educated and in 1881 working at the University of London. As a woman of independent financial means she also travelled and given the family connection with Somaliland she went to Africa. She published memoirs of her visit in 1907 entitled “A Woman’s Pleasure Trip in Somaliland” which included her own photographs and accounts of sights not normally noted. Copies of this book are now rare and very valuable, currently selling for between £200-£500 in specialist bookshops. In a letter accompanying one of these she wrote “I always consider the time I spent in Somaliland was the most interesting, if not the happiest, part of my life, and fearing to lose the impression of that time I jotted down the little incidents of my stay, while they were quite fresh in my mind” [11]

My journey through the Swayne family tree has bought me into contact with so many wonderful characters it’s impossible to write about the all here, there’s a another explorer and big game hunter, a chess champion, several Bishops and a spymaster to name but a few! What I hope I have done is help to illuminate a little bit of village history that’s been forgotten. As for more research I’ve even been in touch with a living descendant of the Rev. George who has family papers for me to look at….but that’s another story!!

Pucklechurch - Swayne Family History and GenealogySt. Thomas a Becket, Pucklechurch

The "Swayne Window" in Thomas a Becket Church is not immediately obvious from outside or from the inside. It can only be seen properly if you stand right at the side of the altar beyond the choir stalls. Spacially,  it is situated very close to the family burials....Gail Boyle

The inscription on it reads:
" TO THE GLORY OF ALMIGHTY GOD IN THE MEMORY OF GEORGE SWAYNE.M.A. PRIEST
FOR NEARLY 60 YEARS VICAR OF THIS PARISH ALSO OF SARAH HIS WIFE AND 6 SONS
AND 3 DAUGHTERS WHO LIE BURIED NEAR. THE LORD GRANT UNTO THEM THAT THEY MAY
FIND MERCY OF THE LORD IN THAT DAY"

Robert George Swayne - Wadham College

We have again to record with great regret the deaths of several old members of the College. One of these the Rev. Canon Swayne, was for a long period one of the best-known clergymen in the diocese of Salisbury, where he was Chancellor of the Cathedral and canon-residentairy. His beautiful garden sloping down from his house in the Close to the Avon, was famous among all garden lovers, and is not likely to be forgotten by any of the numerous visitors to whom his hospitality was ever ready to show it. He had earned his promotion by his gifts as a preacher, and by his successful parish work at St. Edmind's Salisbury. In his later years he had resigned all his preferments, retiring to a well-earned rest at Bournemnouth where he died.

Bristol Gazette Thursday January 14th 1858

(same report carried by The Bristol Mercury and West Counties Advertiser, Saturday January 16th 1858)

Sad Accident – A very melancholy accident occurred at the neighbouring village of Pucklechurch on Friday last. The Rev. G.C. Swayne was on a visit to his mother for the Christmas holidays and had with him his son, a nice little boy between two and three years of age. On the evening in question the little fellow was put to bed in his crib in the room where his parents slept and which had a fire in it. The family then went to tea and nothing occurred to disturb them, but on one of the ladies going upstairs shortly after to see how their little charge was getting on, she was greatly alarmed to find the room full of smoke, and the bed, by the side of which the child’s crib was placed, on fire. She immediately rushed to the crib, and was horror-struck to find the poor little boy apparently dead, having been dreadfully burnt about the head, face and limbs. Medical assistance was quickly procured, but all in vain, for the poor child sunk under the injuries in about half-an-hour. It was some consolation to presume that he had not suffered much, as he was evidently suffocated before the flame reached the crib. The accident was occasioned by a live coal flying from the fire and igniting the bedclothes. An inquest was subsequently held by Mr. Gaisford and a verdict in accordance with the facts returned.

N.B. Mr Gaisford did not register the death officially until 31st March 1858. The death certificate clearly states “Suffocated by the turning of certain bed furniture”. One can only presume that records were transcribed incorrectly by a clerk... Gail Boyle

From Gail Boyle:
Early Days in Somaliland and Other Tales - A Pioneer's Notebook - H.G.C. Swayne - published by his grandson and grand-daughter in 1996. The appendix  was written by a colleague and friend of HGC (and verified with him) and was published in The Royal Engineer's Journal 1940. The article states that HGC was the eldest son of the Rev. George Carles Swayne, an Anglican Chaplain who had worked in France, Italy, Germany and Switzerland and also mentions his work in Somaliland with his brother EJE.
HGC's siblings are mentioned throughout the text including:
E.J.E but also a younger sister called Dagmar who became a quite well-known sculptress in France - Harald studied art in Paris and shared a studio there with her.
Dagmar was apparently born 1864 and died 1955 - presumably in Paris. She married a french man called Gabriel Saint-Rene Taillandier who was an organist and composer having studied under a famous musician Cesar Franck.
Gabriel's father was Rene Gaspard Saint-Rene Taillandier, obviously a man of some repute:
Other family members I have a reference to is another sister HGC calls Georgie (so probably Georgia or Georgina) who he visited in Aachen in 1910 - he stayed with her and Jack Harston, but whether they were married or not is unclear from the text. During the same visit he mentions his nephew Harald who was probably Georgie's son.
