Richard Knight of Downton

Born 1659 in Downton, Herefordshire, Richard Knight married Elizabeth Payne in 1692, and died 1745 in Downton, Herefordshire. Richard built a huge fortune as an ironmaster and strategically married off his children into families which would further benefit the business.
Generous marriage settlements (dowries) ensured that his daughters married into the best families. He made his sons partners in the family business and stipulated in his Will that his own assets be handed down through the generations to the most senior of his male descendants, a male tail.
Richard and Elizabeth had fifteen children, of whom nine married. At least five of these children have descendants living today.
