| Life and Times Early Life in England and Scotland Humphrey was born in Papcastle, Cumberland, England in 1810, the 11th of 14 children. Family Connections 1) His father's cousin Henrietta Sebright had married the 2nd Earl Harewood. 2) His father's brother, John Knight had married the daughter of the 1st Lord Headley. 3) His father's aunt, Elizabeth Philadelphia Cunyngham had married Charles Pearce Hall, son of Wredenhall Pearce of Downton Hall. 4) Charles Pearce Hall's great nephew, Sir William Edward Rouse-Boughton married Charlotte Knight in 1824. Humphrey's father's second cousin was Charlotte Knight. 1841 Scottish Census Humphrey appears, aged 31, living at Main Street, Dalbeattie, Kirkudbrightshire, Scotland. Also at the same address were Michael and Elizabeth Caven (both aged 36) and their five children. Caven is a name with no known connection to Humphrey's family. Humphrey is listed as being of "independent means". Perhaps he was boarding with the Cavens. Dalbeattie was then a river port and would have had fairly easy access across the Solway Firth to Maryport in Cumberland, England near Humphrey's family in Papcastle. But why did Humphrey go to Scotland? Also living in Dalbeattie (Miln? Street) was Margaret Hair, aged 27 and unmarried. Margaret was living with her parents, Robert and Mary Hair, Robert's mother Jannet, and Margaret's brother, Robert junior. Rober senior was a millwright and Robert junior a turner. Margaret was pregnant seven months later. Children and Marriage Between the 1841 Census and the 1851 Census Humphrey and Margaret would have four children. They married at Dalbeattie in August 1845 with their first two children; Mary and Robert attending the wedding. Humphrey's family would have been unimpressed not only with the order of events but with his choice of a mill worker's daughter. 1851 Scottish Census Humphrey and his wife Margaret are still living in Main Street, Dalbeattie with their four children. Humphrey had been reduced to working at the mill himself, being listed as a "salesman and book-keeper at saw mill". He was no longer of "independent means" which had probably been dependent on the goodwill of his father. Arrival in Australia In May 1853, Humphrey, Margaret and children Mary, Robert, Thomas and William arrived in Melbourne on board the Passaroeang, young James having died between the 1851 Census and their arrival in Australia. Margaret's brother, Robert was also on board. Robert died in 1885 aged about 75, never having married. |
