In the 18th and 19th centuries, Elton Hall was occupied by the Saweys of Richard's Castle. However, the landscape's historical importance dates to the period 1791-1808, when the estate was occupied by Thomas Andrew Knight, younger brother of Richard Payne Knight of Downton Castle. Thomas Knight experimented in agricultural and horticultural developments, particularly at Elton where he built a walled garden for the purpose near Elton Farm. The stream on the S side of Elton Hall was landscaped by Knight's daughter. The gardens behind the hall were enclosed by a ha-ha. The surrounding landscape was planted with relatively few trees, while there were extensive orchards near the house; these have recently been replanted. The gardens are now being replanted and reorganised, with new features, and are the home of the national collection of Echinacea. |
