Elizabeth, Mrs Daniel Cunyngham Another google discovery has been the painting "Elizabeth, Mrs Daniel Cunyngham" by the Scottish artist Allan Ramsay which is owned by the National Gallery of Scotland and hangs at Duff House, Banff. Elizabeth and Daniel were Henrietta's parents. The title of the painting says a lot about the status of women from this time. No wonder I have not been able to find her maiden name or any details of her family. Perhaps someone knows something of the history of this painting. How did the National Gallery of Scotland come to own it? When was it painted? Nicola Kalinsky, Chief Curator at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery tells me that the painting was acquired in 1951. Further email from Penelope Carter at National Galleries of Scotland: Painted about 1740 The pose, lines of the costume and the background follow closely Kneller's portrait of Margaret Cecil, Countess of Ranelagh, one of his series of 'Hampton Court Beauties' painted in the mid-1690s. NG 2133 was probably painted in 1740 or shortly before. The sitter's name was Note from Wombat: If the painting was sold from Wolverley House in 1945 then that sale was following the death of Eric Ayshford Knight in 1944, head of the Knight family at his death. Eric lived at the family seat, Wolverley House, and was succeeded by his son Richard Ayshford Knight who gave the house to the Church. David K Faille a descendant Elizabeth's through her son, Anthony, tells me that Elizabeth's maiden name was Hodges (as per Anthony's death certificate, issued in Lille, France).
