| How I Found
My Cunynghams Until late 2006 I had no knowledge of this line of ancestors. Not quite true. From my Knight family research I knew that my fifth great grandfather JohnKnight had married Henrietta Cunyngham, daughter of Daniel Cunyngham. But that's all..Who was Daniel Cunyngham? Eventually I stumbled on a Will in the UK National Archives; "Will of Daniel Cunyngham, late of Cayon in the Island of St. Christopher in America but now of Ludlow in the County of Salop, Esquire dated 15 September 1770; codicil dated 17 September 1772. Administration granted 15 November 1777." You can see the original Will by clicking on this link. Anyone care to transcibe it? The Will mentioned a daughter Henrietta. Jackpot. I then googled "Daniel Cunyngham, late of Cayon in the Island of St. Christopher" and found that a John Ravillious had posted numerous pieces on this family so I emailed him. John also had a copy of Daniel's Will but was unable to make any further progress on Henrietta as her married surname was not mentioned in the Will. So that's how I was able to link my information on the Knight family with John's information on the Cunynghams. He was headed south and I was headed north and we bumped into each other. In his Will, Daniel had also mentioned his good friend "Edward Knight the younger". Edward was Henrietta's brother-in-law but John Ravillious had no reason to see the significance of the Knight name. John Ravillious's painstaking work on the Cunynghams is extraordinary. He has established many lines of descent from virtually every character in medieval history and beyond. For example, John has traced 15 different lines back through Robert the Bruce. Hard to believe that he could be an ancestor 15 different ways. But wait, there's more..... Cunyngham
(1669-1743) Laird of Baidland, was
Henrietta Knight's grandfather.(That makes him a
contemporary
of Richard Knight (1659-1745) who was Henrietta's husband's grandfather) A lot is known about Robert's life and many of his descendants have been traced. | Marcus
of the Woods became notorious during
the summer of 1834. The slave register of 1829 shows a Marcus, who had
been
acquired by "purchase from the public", among the slaves owned by
Anthony Cunyngham. He escaped from the estate in 1831 and led a small
band of
more than 30 runaways that were very active on the leeward side of the
island
between Stone Fort and Vambelle, well in sight of Brimstone Hill. Marcus was wanted for murder. He had a musket in his possession and knew how to use it. During the period of Martial Law that followed the Declaration of Emancipation, troops were sent into the mountains of the interior "in order to convince the Negroes, said to be concealed there, that their haunts are at any time accessible by troops." Marcus was sighted on that occasion but the guide who was leading the military party gave their presence away. In a letter dated the 11th August 1834, A.P. Pogson manager of Cunyngham's claimed that "no order may be expected in the country unless he [Marcus] is taken." A report to the Assembly in June 1834 showed that there were 94 slaves absent from various estates on St. Kitts. There is no evidence of Marcus ever having been captured. |

The Barony of Glengarnock Glengarnock
is one of three baronies which together form the parish of Kilbirnie in
the
district of Cunningham which lies in north Ayrshire.
The earliest known proprietors of the barony
were the Cunninghams of Glengarnock, a cadet branch of the Cunninghams
of
Glencairn. The
Cunningham family can be
traced back as far as the twelfth century in The
founder of the Glengarnock family is believed to be Reginald, the
second son of
Edward Cunningham of Kilmaurs, who married the daughter and heiress of
Riddell
of Glengarnock sometime around the middle of the thirteenth century. William Cunningham of
Glengarnock is recorded
as having been killed at the In
1677 Glengarnock was acquired by Patrick Lindsay from Richard
Cunningham. The
Lindsays had already gained the adjacent barony of Kilbirnie through
the
marriage of Patrick Lindsay, second son of John Lindsay, 17th Earl of
Crawford
and 1st Earl of Lindsay, and Margaret, second daughter of Sir John
Crawford of
Kilbirnie. In 1681
they were succeeded
by their son John Lindsay Crawford who in 1703 was created Viscount
Garnock,
Lord Kilbirnie, Kingsburn, and Drumry by Queen Anne.
In the same year he adorned the
laird’s loft
of the fifteenth century parish In
1708 his son Patrick became the 2nd Viscount Garnock.
He died in 1735 and was buried among his
ancestors in Kilbirnie Kirk. His
eldest
son John thus became the 3rd Viscount but died aged 16 only to be
succeeded by
his brother George as the 4th Viscount.
In 1749 he fell heir to the titles and estates
of John, 20th Earl of
Crawford and 4th Lord Lindsay and settled with his wife Jean Hamilton
at The
Lindsay honours became the right and heritage of the next male heir of
the
deceased earl - a David Lindsay, then an army sergeant.
This David Lindsay, 7th Earl of Lindsay, 6th
Viscount Garnock, and 16th Lord Lindsay of the Byres, died without male
heirs
therefore Major General Sir Patrick Lindsay, KB, succeeded. He was the last of his
line so the titles,
9th Earl of Lindsay, 8th Viscount Garnock, and 18th Lord Lindsay of the
Byres,
fell to Henry Lindsay Bethune. Henry
was
born in 1787 and was said to be 6 feet 7 inches tall, entered the
service of
the East India Company becoming their agent at the Court of Persia. He married Coutts Trotter
in 1822, and died
in 1851. Their son,
John Trotter Lindsay
Bethune, became 10th Earl of Lindsay, 9th Viscount Garnock, and 19th
Lord
Lindsay. In 1894 he
died and having no
family the title passed to David Lindsay Bethune. It
was the Earl of Glasgow, who in 1885 finding the family in financial
difficulties, conveyed the whole of his estate, real and personal, to
trustees
with the object of saving for the family the estate in The
Cochranes are a long established family in Thomas Cochrane, third son of the 11th Earl of
Dundonald and his wife Louisa Mackinnon, a former soldier and civil
servant,
was created Baron Cochrane of Cults, of Crawford Priory, Fife, in 1919. The present Baron of
Auchtermunzie is the
Right Honourable Ralph Henry Vere Cochrane, (Fourth) Baron Cochrane of
Cults,
who is selling the title. |
