THE 9TH MARQUESS OF
HERTFORD ,
Earl
of Hertford,
Earl
of Yarmouth,
Co Norfolk, Viscount
Beauchamp,
Baron
Conway of Ragley,
Co Warwick, and Baron
Conway and Killultagh,
Co Antrim (Henry Jocelyn Seymour [The Most Hon The Marquess of Hertford, Ragley
Hall, Alcester, Warwicks B49 5NJ]; born 6 July 1958 (HRH THE DUKE OF KENT
stood sponsor); succeeded f 1997; educated Harrow and RAC
Cirencester; married 15 Dec 1990 •Beatriz, daughter of Jorge Karam, of
Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and has: 1a +WILLIAM FRANCIS,
Earl of Yarmouth; born 2 Nov 1993 2a +Edward George;
born 24 Jan 1995 1a •Gabriella Helen;
born 23 April 1992 2a •Antonia Louisa;
born 24 July 1998 Hertford, previous
creations: Gilbert de Clare was
created Earl of Hertford, probably in 1138, by KING STEPHEN after inheriting the
vast landed possessions of his father Richard Fitz Gilbert or de Clare, who in
turn was male-line great-grandson of Godfrey Count of Brionne, illegitimate son
of RICHARD I DUKE OF NORMANDY (see Charles Mosley, Blood Royal, p.
101). Subsequently this 1st Earl of Hertford apparently supported the EMPRESS
MAUD. His successor, a brother called Roger, is usually known as Earl of Clare
but nevertheless seems to have inherited the Earldom of Hertford as well.
(Meanwhile a younger branch of the family became Earls of Pembroke; see
PEMBROKE and MONTGOMERY, E, preliminary remarks.) The 3rd Earl, Roger's son
Richard, was likewise better known as Earl of Clare but is most celebrated for
his part in the proceedings that led up to the issuing of the Magna Carta, of
which he was one of the 25 baronial guarantors (inasmuch as one can trust the
primary sources for that list, which contradict each other or are in other ways
suspect). He married Amice, ultimately sole heir of the Earls of Gloucester who
descended illegitimately from HENRY I (see Charles Mosley, Ibid,
p. 102), and his and Amice's own descendants were known as Earls of Gloucester
(see ROYAL FAMILY, section GLOUCESTER, D) and Hertford equally until the line
died out when the 7th Earl was killed in battle at the Scottish victory over the
English of Bannockburn in 1314. The title of Earl of
Hertford was revived over two centuries later for Edward Seymour, later 1st Duke
of Somerset (qv), but was forfeited on his attainder in January 1551/2.
His son was created Earl of Hertford anew in January 1558/9 and the latter's
grandson, who inherited the Earldom, was promoted Marquess of Hertford in 1641,
while the attainder affecting the Dukedom of Somerset (though not it would seem
the 1537 creation of Earl of Somerset) was lifted in 1660. With the death in
1675 of the restored Duke of Somerset's younger son John, 3rd Duke of Somerset,
the Marquessate of Hertford expired, but the Earldom of Hertford continued in
the line of Dukes of Somerset who were his cousins till the death without
surviving male issue of the 7th Duke in February 1749/50, when it too
expired. Lineage:

1 April 1877; married 11 Aug 1904 Maj Hugh Dudley Carleton, DSO
(died 9 Aug 1906), and had issue Seat: Ragley Hall, Alcester,
Warwicks. The house was originally designed in the late 17th century by Robert
Hooke, who in the versatile spirit of that age was chiefly a scientist rather
than architect; indeed Ragley is the only example of his work in the latter
field. He had been commissioned by the Earl of Conway, whose family owned the
estate, and although the entrance front has had a late-18th-century portico
imposed on it by Wyatt, to which a double-set of steps surmounted by a terrace
form the base (the work of John Tasker some hundred years later), the overall
appearance is still predominantly Restoration-Williamite. Around the time of the
Wyatt addition to the centre-front elevation the demolition took place of a pair
of wings, separate from the main block though designed to form a single group to
the eye. Inside there are a
billiard room and study decorated by James Gibbs, a Wyatt-designed dining room,
saloon and drawing room and – the gem of the entire house internally – the hall,
with its colourful and ornate plasterwork, the creation overall again of Gibbs.
On the wall above the more southerly of the two staircases, both thought to have
been late Victorian installations, is an early-1970s mural by Graham Rust
depicting the 8th Marquess and members of his
family. Peerage
