Mannington
Hall, Mannington, Norwich; Wolterton Hall, Norfolk. A certain William Lumnor
built Mannington in 1460, during the Wars of the Roses. The grey stone of the
elevations, the moat, which may predate the present house, and a lightly
battlemented top to the great southern central block above a cornice,
culminating in a polygonal but not very substantial tower at the southwest
corner which in turn is matched by a still smaller one the other side of a
low-pitched gable further along towards the southeast corner, give Mannington
great charm. But it is difficult to believe it could have been seriously
defensible, especially given the generously proportioned mullion windows on
three storeys. They have gently curved tops on the uppermost storey and
straight horizontal ones surmounted by dripstones lower down but are of two to
four bays wide and would not have kept a determined attacker out. They would
appear to be 16th-century, however, so may have replaced narrower apertures
after the newly arrived Tudor dynasty had restored peace to the Norfolk
countryside. Mannington
passed down through families called Tirel and Dodge till the 17th-century Civil
War, when it was owned by Sir John Potts, who was nevertheless related to the
previous proprietors. It was bought by the 1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton in
1720, but only for use as a dower house. (Mannington and Wolterton are on the
same estate, which now extends to about 2,000 acres.) None of the Walpoles
actually lived there till the mid–19th century, when the purchaser's descendant
the 5th Baron Walpole of Wolterton and 7th Baron Walpole of Walpole (who
was also the 4th Earl of Orford of the 2nd creation) moved in. Like his
namesake the 4th Earl of Orford of the first creation, better known as Horace
Walpole, he was enthralled by the past, and refurbished and enlarged his new
home. The northeast and northern wings date from his time. Their projection
from the earlier part gives Mannington the shape of a question mark minus the
dot, and with its trunk substantially thicker than its arched head.
Subsequently the house was let and only reoccupied by the head of the family,
the present Lord Walpole, in 1969. He has completely transformed the grounds,
placing special emphasis on roses, which have an area all of their own. A
variety of historical species are on display there, each in a setting
landscaped to depict the English garden as it looked in the appropriate period. Wolterton
dates from the 1720s, being erected in Norfolk red brick with Portland stone
facing by the 1st Baron Walpole of Wolterton. He seems initially to have
intended remodelling an earlier house on which his newly-bought estate centred.
When that largely burned down he started afresh, enlisting the designs of
Thomas Ripley, who had worked on Houghton (see CHOLMONDELEY, M) for his
brother Sir Robert. The main elevation is a break-front one and consists of two
storeys of five bays each over a basement enclosed in arches underneath a
terrace with balustrades. The three central bays are surmounted by a pediment,
to either side of which stretches a large balustraded parapet. During the 19th
century G S Repton remodelled the house on its southern side and an extension
culminating in a tower to the east was put up to designs by Philip Hardwick.
After the 4th Baron Walpole of Wolterton and 6th Baron Walpole of
Walpole, who was also 3rd Earl of Orford, died in 1858 and Mannington was
adopted as the family seat, Wolterton was shut up for nearly half a century.
The 6th Baron Walpole of Wolterton and 8th Baron Walpole of Walpole (who
was also the 5th and last Earl of Orford of the second creation) moved back in
after inheriting the titles. Wolterton's subsequent history is almost a
catalogue of the 20th-century woes of the English country house: wartime
requisitioning, a fire, dry rot and the sale of contents following the
lingering illness of its last occupant the 7th/9th Baron, who was thus
prevented from caring for it. Happily the 1990s have seen a thorough
restoration programme set in motion. The
core of the house contains the main staircase. As with so many mansions of the
period, the grand apartments are on the first floor, or piano nobile. They
include the Blue Drawing Room, the Boudoir, the Marble Hall, the Saloon, the
State Bed Room with its adjacent Dressing Room, the State Dining Room and the
Venetian Room. Peerage
