Lineage (of ATTWOOD)–This family claims descent from the ancient Worcestershire house of Attwood of Park Attwood, Wolverley and Perdiswell.

GEORGE ATTWOOD, of Austcliff in Wolverley, Worcs, paid a heriot on the death of his f, Richard Attwood, of Austcliff, and surrendered the property to the Lord of the Manor (the Prior or Bp Worcester) in 1530-31, this messuage and land having belonged to his forefather Thomas Attwood, of Austcliff, in 1434-35. George Attwood appears to have subsequently settled at Dudley, in or previous to the year 1562. His will bears date 10 May, 1581. By Elizabeth (died will proved 1590), he had issue, with daughters., three sons,

1a George, of Dudley, who afterwards removed to Halesowen.

2a Richard, of Dudley, where his descendants continued to reside until c 1730.

2c Melville, F.G.S.; married Jane Alice, daughter of David Forbes, of the I. of M, and sister of the celebrated Prof Edward Forbes, and died at Berkeley, nr San Francisco, USA, 1898, having had, with other issue, and elder surviving son,

George, F.G.S., M.I.C.E, of Steyning Manor, Stogursey, Somerset; born 1845; married 1st, Maria Louisa (died without issue ), daughter of John Tansley, of Bedford; and 2nd, Charlotte Caroline (who married 2nd, Rev Robert Pearson Strange), daughter of William Burchell, of 45, Gloucester Gardens, W., Under Sheriff of the City of London, and died 9 Feb 1912, having by her had issue, George Wolverley, who died an Infant

MATTHIAS ATTWOOD, of Hawne House, DL and JP for Worcs, Salop, and Staffs, purchased the celebrated estate of The Leasowes, nr Halesowen, and various other large properties, original partner in the well-known banking-house of Spooner & Attwoods; married Ann (died 8 Oct 1834), daughter of Thomas Adams (previously and more correctly spelt Addams), of Cakemore House, nr Halesowen, and sis, and in her issue eventually sole heiress of her last surviving brother Charles Adams, of Cakemore House, and had issue,

1a George, of Edgbaston Priory, nr Birmingham, also of Hawne House and The Leasowes, High Bailiff of Birmingham 1827; educated U College Oxford (MA); married Mary, daughter of Thomas Kinnersley, DL, of Clough Hall, Staffs, and had issue, Georgiana Mary, who died unm in Dresden, Germany, 1885.

2a Matthias, of Gracechurch Street, in City of London and of Dulwich Hill House, Surrey, MP for Whitehaven, Master of Merchant Taylors' Co 1833; married Susannah, daughter of William Twells, of Birmingham, and aunt to Philip Twells, subsequently last MP for the City of London, and had issue, an only son, Matthias Wolverley, of Gracechurch Street and Dulwich Hill aforesaid, DL and JP Middlesex, FRGS, and MP for Greenwich, who died unm 1865.

4a James Henry, of Moss Hill, nr Farlam, Cumberland, sometime of Odessa, Russia; married at Vienna, 1820, Margaret Williams, and had issue. His grand-dau Mary Alice (Attwood); married Maj Sidney James Waudby, and had issue.

5a Edward, of Bishop Wearmouth, Co Durham married Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of John Elliot, of Whitehaven, and died 1866, leaving issue, an only daughter and heiress,

Caroline Anne, of Oakwood, Beckenham, Kent; married John Moore, and died 13 June, 1908. He died 19 Sept 1910, leaving issue.

6a Charles, of Holyrood House, nr Walsingham, Co Durham, founder of the Town of Tow Law, etc.; married Sarah Lee Downs, and died without issue 1875.

7a Benjamin, of Dulwich Hill, Surrey (which he inherited from his nephew, Matthias Wolverley Attwood, MP), and of Pengelly House, Cheshunt, Herts; died without issue 1874.

1a Mary Anne, of Hawne House aforesaid, being the last of the Attwoods there resident; died unm 1872, aged 90.

2a Susannah; died unm 1819.

3a Rachel Maria; married William Mathews, DL, JP, of Kingswinford, Staffs, and afterwards of Parkfield, Malvern, Worcs, and died his widow, 1871, leaving issue.

Matthias Attwood, of Hawne House; died 24 Nov 1836, aged 90, when the bulk of his property passed to his eldest son, but his 3rd son,

THOMAS ATTWOOD; born at Hawne House, 6 Oct 1783, inherited a partnership in the banking house of Attwood & Spooner, and became the promoter of the Reform Bill of 1832, and founder of Political Unions, High Bailiff of Birmingham 1811, the first rep. in Parl(y) for that borough 1832, and was elected in that year an Hon Freeman of City of London in recognition of his efforts on behalf of Parl(y) reform; married 1st, Elizabeth (died 26 April, 1840), daughter of William Carless, of Birmingham, and of Harborne, Staffs, Master Extraordinary in Chancery, and sister and elder of the two eventual co-heiresses of Rev Edward Carless, MA, of Wolstanton, Staffs, and had issue.

1a George de Bosco; married Mary, daughter of William Medley, of Mansfield, Iver, Bucks, and of City of London, and had, with other issue (died young or unmarried),

1b George Reginald, of Glaslyn Court, Llanelly, Brecon, who succeeded his distant cousin, James Harrington Attwood, as heir male of the Attwoods of Hawne 1892; married Constance Marion (who married 2nd, 1907, Sir Alexander Bruce Tulloch, KCB, CMG, who died 25 May, 1920), daughter of Rev William Harper Brandreth, MA, Rector of Standish, Lancs, and Hon Canon of Manchester (see WATSON-GANDY-BRANDRETH formerly of Heaves), and died 1 Feb 1901, having by her had issue,

1b Agnes Mansfield; married 11 Aug 1870, Alfred Homfray, of Broadwaters House, Kidderminster, Worcs, and died 2 Nov 1877, leaving issue (see Volume II, HOMFRAY formerly of Otterbourne Court). He died 10 March, 1920.

2b Rowena Fanny Maria; married Charles Augustus Barnes, of Solesbridge, Herts, and died 13 March, 1878, leaving issue, an only child (Alice Rowena Attwood, who married her cousin-german, Charles Edward Shackle, C.E, and had issue).

3b Rosamond; married Charles William Shackle, of Harlington, Middlesex, and died his widow, 12 Dec 1928, leaving surviving issue, two sons.

Algernon Foulkes, Capt Roy Fus, served in WW I; born 1880; educated Ch Ch Oxford, k in the Battle of the Aisne, 14 Sept 1914. Edith Carless; died unm 31 May, 1935.

Thomas Attwood, MP; married 2nd, Elizabeth (died without issue 1888), daughter of Joseph Grice, of Handsworth Hall, Staffs, and died 6 March, 1856. His 2nd son,

THOMAS AURELIUS ATTWOOD, of Birmingham, JP Warwicks, Barrister-at-law, of Lincoln's Inn, and banker, resided many years at the old family seat of Hawne House and subsequently at Wood End House (Pipe Manor), in Erdington, Warwicks, Maj Warwicks Rifle Vols.; born 4 March, 1810; married Mary (died 23 Nov 1917, aged 97), eldest daughter of Joseph Smallwood, of Castle Bromwich, Warwicks, and died 8 April, 1864, leaving issue, an only child,

THOMAS ARTHUR CARLESS ATTWOOD, MA, FSA (1907), FZS, of Sion Hill House, Wolverley, Worcs, and late of the Inner Temple; born 27 May, 1863; educated Uppingham, and Pembroke College Oxford (MA 1889), succeeded his cousin George Reginald Attwood, of Glaslyn, as heir male and representative of his family 1901; married 5 Oct 1892 (married annulled 1902), Hon Hilda Evelyn Pomeroy (died 28 Oct 1948), daughter of 6th Viscount Harberton, JP (see BURKE'S Peerage), and died without issue 21 April, 1937.

EDWARD FREEMAN, of Bryn Celyn, Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire, Maj (2nd i/c) 10th Bn Roy Welch Fus; born 20 Nov 1875; married 12 May, 1897, Katherine Margaret (who married 2nd, 1 July, 1918, Robert Thomas Ffoulkes, of Pwllheli, and died 19 March, 1955), daughter of Maj-Gen William Augustus Gillespie, Bombay SC, of Brynderwyn, Usk, Mon., and was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium, 6 March, 1916, leaving issue.

Maj-Gen Freeman-Attwood succeeded to Sion Hill House, Wolverley under the will of his great-grandmother's nephew, Thomas Arthur Carless Attwood, conditionally upon his assuming the name and arms of Attwood; he assumed by Roy License, 20 Oct 1937, the name of Attwood in addition to and after his patronymic.
