Seats: Boughton House, Kettering, Northants; Bowhill, Selkirk, Borders Region; Drumlanrig, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.

Boughton is the work of the 1st Duke of Montagu of the 1705 creation (see MANCHESTER, D), who was Ambassador to France in the 1660s and 1670s. He seems to have acquired a taste for the native civilisation while en poste and back home in England added to what had originally been a 15th-century monastery a wholly French-looking mansion, complete with mansard roof, high rectangular windows and an arcade on the park side. The work was not complete by the Duke's death in 1709 but much of it had been laid out by 1695. The old monastery had already been extended in a somewhat haphazard way (the MONTAGUs had owned the property since the late 1520s) and the result was a series of no fewer than seven courtyards. Inside, particularly in the state apartments, Boughton is a monument to the age it was enlarged in, with parquet floors, ceilings and friezes by Louis Chéron, panelling, murals, Restoration and William-and-Mary furniture and Mortlake tapestries. The collection of paintings, which includes works by Batoni, Carracci, El Greco, Gainsborough and Van Dyck, is of the first importance. The property came to the BUCCLEUCHs through the daughter of the 2nd and last Duke of Montagu of the 1705 creation.

Bowhill is more obviously the centre of an estate than the other two seats. Indeed architecturally it is not terribly distinguished, even though the Victorian alterations which so enlarged it were carried out very much with one respectful eye on its classical origins. The estate was a Scott property from some way back but passed into the ownership of a branch of the MURRAYs between 1690 and 1745. It was under these alien proprietors that the house itself was begun, probably as an intended hunting lodge. The 2nd Duke bought back the place as a residence for his younger son in 1745, a year which saw not just a piece of real estate change hands but very nearly the Crown. His plans, like Bonnie Prince Charlie's, were frustrated: the younger son soon died, as did the Duke himself, and Bowhill passed to the next holder of the title, who lived elsewhere. It was not till the 4th Duke's time that Bowhill came to be occupied by the family, though even now it was only as a summer retreat to begin with.

The surrounding landscape must have cast a spell, however, for on succeeding to the title the 4th Duke adopted Bowhill as one of his main homes, commissioning William Atkinson to tack on a villa-style extension to the south side and throwing out east and west wings a few years afterwards, in the case of the former so as to accommodate a dining room. Just over a decade later another architect, William Burn (see also BRODIE OF BRODIE, section Seat), shifted the main entrance round to the north face, allowing the southerly one to be used for private access. He also shook up Bowhill's internal organs, repositioning the principal staircase in the westerly part of the building and knocking down intervening walls to create a larger saloon and drawing room at the expense of what had been self-contained hallways contiguous to them. Burn continued to be occupied remodelling Bowhill for just about the rest of his life, despite formally abandoning his lucrative Edinburgh practice for a still more lucrative London one in 1844. Indeed his position seems to have been looked on not just as that of estate master builder but as almost hereditary, since after his death in 1870 further work continued under his nephew J MacVicar Anderson. It was the latter who erected the billiard room, the former chapel, which nowadays shelters relics of the Duke of Monmouth, and - perhaps as a profane counterweight - the smoking room.

Bowhill's contents, like Boughton's, are of the first importance. They include works by such distinguished portraitists as Gainsborough, Kneller, Lely, Reynolds and Van Dyck and such leading landscape or townscape artists as Canaletto, Guardi, Lorrain and Ruysdael. The Bowhill collection of miniatures includes Hilliards, a Holbein and the celebrated but unfinished depiction of OLIVER CROMWELL by Samuel Cooper. There are also tapestries from the Mortlake works and examples of the finest boulle, Sévres and Meissen. The gem of the collection for many is the Louis Quatorze looking glass presented to Monmouth by CHARLES II. It was a dangerous gift: had the admittedly godlike youth been less beguiled by his own attractiveness he might not have fallen victim to the hubris that led him ultimately to the block. A study contains memorabilia of Sir Walter Scott, a friend of the 4th Duke.

Drumlanrig dates from approximately the same period as Boughton but on the whole looks backwards rather than to contemporary influences. It is usually regarded as the last of the pre-classical mansions in Scotland. It was built in the period 1679–91, probably by Robert Mylne, master mason to the King, or alternatively by James Smith, Mylne's son-in-law. Despite this supposedly reactionary purpose, there are decorative features such as the balustrade surmounting the elevation, the steps up to the front door and the mouldings round the door itself which would never have appeared on a castle built for defence alone, as the previous castle on the site had been. Even the pink colour of the sandstone is hardly warlike. Constructed by the DOUGLASes shortly after the Restoration, Drumlanrig passed to the Scott BUCCLEUCHs along with the Douglas Dukedom of Queensberry. Bonnie Prince Charlie spent the night at Drumlanrig while withdrawing back into the Scottish Highlands in December 1745. One of the relics of his career is a field kettle he used on campaign, also a teapot supposed to have been Flora Macdonald's.

As with the two other Buccleuch properties, Drumlanrig also contains superb paintings: a Breughel, a Cuyp, Knellers, Lelys, Allan Ramsays, Teniers. There is even a Holbein, a Leonardo and a Rembrandt. Some of the carvings over the doors are by Grinling Gibbons.
