Seat: Burwarton, Salop. The original house was built in the early 19th century to Salvin's designs. Over the next century it was added to, though unsystematically, until it contained 40 bedrooms and was costing the equivalent today of some £50,000 a year just to heat. So by the mid–1950s the 10th Viscount engaged the firm of Philip Skelcher & Partners to carry out some badly needed pruning. The huge north and northwest chunks, which included a water tower, were pulled down, as were also the easterly-aspect drawing and billards rooms. The round bay of the dining room was converted into a canted one and the sitting room then became the drawing room. The spacious library, which measured 32 feet by 57, alone of the major internal features was preserved. The latter, though itself only dating back to the early 20th century, contains a mid–18th-century marble fireplace from Brancepth Castle, Co Durham, once a Hamilton-Russell property too. The down-sized dining room was also fitted out with materials from Brancepeth. The result, still a commodious mansion with between nine and 11 bedrooms and five bathrooms, had cost the early-2000s equivalent of over £450,000.
