Lineage–The present head of the family represents, through the marr. of Henry Sanford, of Nynehead (died 1644), with Mary, daughter of Henry Ayshford, of Ayshford, Devon, the AYSHFORDS of Ayshford. The oldest Ayshford deed in possession of Mr. Ayshford Sanford bears date anno 43 HENRY III, and relates to a final award of a piece of land (still in Mr. Ayshford Sanford's possession) between Perrel de Sanford and Thomas de Ayshford. The existing chapel of Ayshford is of the 14th century, but on repairing it, there was found carving of the 11th and 12th centuries embedded in the wall, showing the existence of an earlier building. The estate of Ayshford appears never to have been sold.
