Ayshford; born 5 April, 1953. Lineage–The present head of
the family represents, through the marr. of Henry Sanford, of Nynehead (died
1644), with Mary, daughter of Henry Ayshford, of Ayshford, JOHN SANFORD, Lord of
Brook Sanford, in Winsford and Exton, Somerset, was possessed of that manor in
the reign of RICHARD II, held other lands in Somerset and Devon; married
and had issue, HUGO SANDFORD, of
Brook Sanford; married Matilda (said to have been a Bassett), and had
issue, WILLIAM SANFORD, of
Brook Sanford; married Agnes, widow of Robert Alexander, of Sidmouth, and
Halberton, 1a PHILIP, of whom
presently. 2a John, of Halberton
and Sidmouth, inherited from his mother by deed temp. EDWARD IV;
married Elizabeth Bonville, of Dulverton, and had issue, a son, John; married
1st, Ann, and had issue, who died young; and 2nd, Margaret, daughter
of Andrew Harlewyn, of Collumpton, and by her had, with other issue, CHRISTOPHER,
succeeded his great-uncle. The elder

Holcombe-Rogus, Devon), and grand-dau of Roger Ayshford, who was great-grandson
of William Ayshford, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas Francis of
Combeflorie, Somerset, and was buried 9 Feb 1644, leaving
issue, 1a MARTIN, of whom

and correspondent of John Locke, the philosopher; married Anne, daughter
of Edward Clarke, of Chipleigh, and died 1718, leaving issue, two sons.
His elder son, WILLIAM SANFORD, of
Nynehead; married Anne (died 1777), daughter of Sir John
Chichester, 4th Bt (see BURKE'S Peerage), and died 1770,
having had issue, five sons and one daughter His eldest
son, JOHN SANFORD, of
Nynehead; married Hon Jane Anstruther, daughter of Sir Alexander
Anstruther, by his wife Baroness Newark (see BURKE'S Dormant and
Extinct Peerage), and died 1779, having had
